Castello del Calcione, a historic treasure nestled in the heart of Tuscany, Italy, has only recently opened its doors to visitors, offering a rare opportunity to experience its centuries-old charm. The castle, steeped in rich history and surrounded by lush woodlands, rolling hills, and tranquil lakes, has been lovingly preserved by a local family with deep roots in the region, known for their long-standing involvement in the prestigious Palio di Siena horse competition. The accommodations at Castello del Calcione are equally enchanting, with elegantly appointed rooms that blend classic Tuscan design with modern comforts. Guests can relax in spacious, beautifully decorated rooms featuring antique furnishings, breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside, and an atmosphere of refined luxury.

(Thursday – Sunday)

Day 1: Thursday – Welcome to Castello del Calcione

Arrival: Transfers arranged from Arezzo, Florence, Siena, or nearby airports (Florence, Rome, Pisa, or Perugia).
Accommodation: Settle into the elegant castle, with time to relax in your luxurious room.
Horse Introduction: Meet your assigned horse, carefully selected from a stable renowned for its participation in the prestigious Palio di Siena. This experience is exclusively for advanced riders, with expert jockeys from the Palio guiding your journey. Depending on your arrival time, you can enjoy a short introductory ride to assess compatibility.
Evening: Aperitivo and welcome dinner at the castle with local Tuscan dishes and wines.

Day 2: Friday – Ride to Fabbriche Farm & Lucignano

Morning: After a delightful castle breakfast, gather at the stables around 10:30 for a scenic ride to Fabbriche Farm, led by experienced Palio di Siena horsemen.
Midday: Stop at Fabbriche for a wine tasting and Tuscan lunch featuring local specialties.
Afternoon: Continue riding to the enchanting medieval town of Lucignano. Enjoy a coffee break at a local bar and explore the winding streets.
Evening: Return to Castello del Calcione in the late afternoon, followed by a relaxing dinner at the castle.
Time in the saddle: Approximately 4 hours.

Day 3: Saturday – Ride to Modanella Castle & Rigomagno Village

Morning: Begin your day with a hearty castle breakfast before departing for a picturesque ride through Tuscany’s rolling hills around 10:00, guided by expert Palio riders.
Midday: Arrive at the medieval Modanella Castle for a charming picnic lunch in its historic surroundings.
Afternoon: Ride through the quaint village of Rigomagno, a beautifully preserved medieval town, before returning to the castle in the late afternoon.
Evening: Unwind with a delicious dinner back at the castle.
Time in the saddle: Approximately 4 hours.

Day 4: Sunday – Morning Ride & Departure

Option 1 – Morning Ride: After breakfast, enjoy a peaceful 2-3 hour morning ride through the surrounding landscape, taking in the stunning Tuscan views, again with the guidance of Palio di Siena horsemen.
Option 2 – Bareback Class: Alternatively, participate in a fun and insightful bareback riding class in the arena for a unique, close-to-the-horse experience.
Midday: Return to the castle for a farewell lunch.
Afternoon: Depart for your transfer to the train station or airport.

This historic horse race, held twice a year in Siena's Piazza del Campo, has been a symbol of tradition and fierce rivalry for centuries. The horses from Castello del Calcione are carefully bred and trained to embody the spirit and strength of the Palio competitors, known for their agility, speed, and stamina.

Route: The average daily riding is between 20 — 25 km (4— 5 hours).
