The Rider
This activity requires you to be experienced in horse riding and fit enough to enjoy and take advantage of this ride. You should be a competent rider, at ease at all paces, capable of riding confidently over varying terrain for several hours at a stretch. It is not essential to be a skilled horseman; both good riders and less experienced riders will find horses suited to their abilities and character. However, it is important that you are fit and able for the sometimes long hours in the saddle, with periods of fast riding.
Mongolians generally stand in the stirrups at all paces and you too may find this a more comfortable way to ride these short striding horses.
The saddles used are tailor made, adapted to both the Mongolian horse and the European rider. 'Safety' stirrups are also available, and please let us know in advance if you require these.
Horses
Mongolia is one of the greatest riding countries in the world. The absence of fences and the vast expanses of the steppes and forests make it an ideal country for horse riding. You will ride the typical Mongolian horse breed famous for their stamina and strong character. Local nomad families will provide us with the horses that we are going to ride. You will become part of the life of the Mongolian horsemen whose lifestyle has survived the pressure of modern times. The Mongol horsemanship is famous, and strikingly different to anything else. The herders keep their horses in a semi-wild condition, allowing them to live freely in herds thus preserving the authentic and natural spirit of their breed.
