Throughout the journey, you’ll stay in a collection of atmospheric bush camps and lodges, each with its own character and sense of place.Camp Davidson | Days 1–2Inspired by the old expedition camps of the early 1900s, Camp Davidson sits among sandstone ridges overlooking wildlife-filled valleys. Guests stay in elegant canvas tents with ensuite bathrooms. The camp runs entirely on solar power and has a small swimming pool.Bellevue Lodges | Day 3Savannah and Seringa Lodges are set on opposite sides of the conservancy, both overlooking open plains frequently visited by wildlife. Expect comfortable interiors, indoor and outdoor dining areas and a small swimming pool.Tree Camp | Days 4 & 7One of the most memorable stays of the journey. Built high around giant mashatu and ancient leadwood trees, Tree Camp overlooks the Majale River. Spacious open-sided sleeping areas with four-poster beds create a wild yet comfortable experience above the bush.The Kgotla | Days 5–6A truly authentic African night under the stars. This traditional open-air enclosure, built from leadwood logs and set beside the Motloutse River, offers hot water, open-air showers and proper bathroom facilities. Guests sleep in individual pods arranged around a large central fire - simple, atmospheric and completely immersed in the wilderness.

Day 1 | Arrival & First Ride – South AfricaArrive at Johannesburg OR Tambo Airport and transfer into the Waterberg to Camp Davidson. After lunch, a safety briefing and meeting your horse, set out on your first ride through the reserve. Expect zebra, giraffe, wildebeest and kudu as you settle into the African landscape, finishing with sundowners on the open plains.Day 2 | Riding the WaterbergA full day exploring the reserve on horseback. Sandy tracks and open grasslands allow for some faster riding, while woodland, lakes and dams bring regular wildlife encounters. Depending on conditions, there may even be splashy canters along the water's edge. The afternoon takes you past hippo territory and back across plains filled with game in the late-day light.Day 3 | Across the Plains to BellevueA longer riding day takes you deeper into the Waterberg through changing landscapes of dense bush and vast open grasslands. This area holds some of the reserve's largest concentrations of wildlife, including huge herds of blesbuck and eland alongside zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, sable and roan antelope. After reaching Bellevue Lodge and some time by the pool, head out again in search of Cape buffalo before watching the sun disappear over the Waterberg escarpment.Day 4 | South Africa to BotswanaRide back through the reserve on a different route before beginning the journey north to Botswana. After crossing the Limpopo River, arrive at the Mashatu stables, meet your new horse and head directly into the wilderness. The afternoon ride to Tree Camp is your first introduction to Mashatu - elephant country, riverine forests and vast open spaces inhabited by giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and numerous predators. By the time you reach camp, modern life already feels very far away.Day 5 | Valley of the Elephants – Tree Camp to KgotlaWake among the trees and set out on one of the journey's great riding days. Follow elephant trails past giant baobabs, cross the Valley of the Elephants and continue through changing terrain toward the Motloutse River. As the landscape opens, there are opportunities for faster riding across plains inhabited by large herds of zebra, wildebeest and impala. Your destination is the Kgotla - an extraordinary open-air camp beside the river.Later, exchange horses for a game drive in search of lion and other predators before sundowners among the ancient rocks. Dinner is served around the fire and the night is spent beneath the African sky, accompanied by the sounds of the bush.Day 6 | Exploring the MotloutseToday there is no need to change camp, allowing the ride to follow the rhythm of the wildlife. Travel along the Motloutse River, stopping near elephant drinking holes and riding beneath enormous mashatu and leadwood trees. The trail continues toward Solomon's Wall, through dramatic sandstone formations and landscapes rich in both wildlife and history. This ancient valley contains traces of some of southern Africa's earliest civilizations, including rock art and archaeological remains linked to the Mapungubwe culture.In the afternoon, head out by vehicle toward the Mamagwa massif for sundowners, returning after dark with another chance to encounter lion, leopard and hyena.Day 7 | River Trails to Tree CampTurn northeast and follow remote river trails back toward the heart of Mashatu. Water draws wildlife into this otherwise dry landscape, so elephant, giraffe, zebra and wildebeest are never far away.The ride combines narrow elephant paths with faster stretches across open mopane country before joining the Majale River, passing rocky pools, cliffs and green riverbanks on the way back to Tree Camp. The afternoon is free from riding, with the option of a guided bush walk or additional game drive.Day 8 | Final Ride & DepartureOne last morning in the saddle. Ride along elevated ridges with sweeping views across Mashatu before descending toward the Majale River, where elephant herds regularly gather to drink and bathe.The final kilometres open onto the plains for some last fast canters back toward the stables. After a shower and lunch beside the Limpopo River, transfer to the nearby airfield for the flight back to Johannesburg.

Level: Advanced Intermediate to ExperiencedThe RiderProficiency in independently controlling a horse at various speeds is necessary. While having the ability to jump natural obstacles is advantageous, it's not mandatory as there are alternate routes available. Being capable of maintaining a light seat during the canter is essential.Prior to each safari, riders will undergo a brief riding evaluation to ensure their competence aligns with the aforementioned criteria. The final decision rests with the evaluating manager. In this significant wildlife zone, it's crucial for us to ascertain your riding skills. Ensuring safety - yours, other participants', and the guides' - is our top priority.HorsesIn Botswana, we maintain a herd of 50 diverse horses, encompassing breeds like S.A. Boerperd, Thoroughbred, Warmblood, and Arab crosses. Our aim is to match each rider with a suitable horse from our herd. For our rides, we utilize McClellan trail rider saddles, specially crafted for extended hours in the saddle. These saddles prioritize comfort for both horse and rider during long-distance journeys.Route:Each day's ride covers a minimum of 20 to 30 kilometers. Our routes do not take a direct path from one camp to another. Riders spend a maximum of five and a half hours in the saddle per day.
